How to Adjust Rain Bird and Hunter Spray Heads (Pattern & Distance)

Adjusting sprinkler spray arc and distance is one of the easiest DIY irrigation jobs. Here's how to do it on the common Rain Bird, Hunter, and Toro heads.

Adjusting sprinkler heads is the most useful hour a homeowner can spend on an irrigation system. It costs nothing, needs one or two simple tools, and it fixes the two most common complaints we hear: water hitting the driveway, and a dry patch that never seems to green up.

The catch is that "sprinkler head" covers several different devices that adjust in completely different ways. Sort out which kind you have first and the rest is straightforward.

Identify what you're working with

Fixed spray heads (sometimes called sprays or pop-ups) shoot a fixed fan of water and don't rotate. They pop up a few inches, spray, and retract. Rain Bird 1800 series and Hunter Pro-Spray are the common ones around here.

Rotors turn slowly back and forth, throwing one or more streams a longer distance. Hunter PGP and Rain Bird 5000 are typical. They cover more ground per head and are usually found on larger lawns.

Rotary nozzles (like the MP Rotator) are a hybrid — they screw onto a spray head body but throw multiple rotating streams. They apply water more slowly, which is genuinely useful in our clay soil.

The adjustment method is different for each, so confirm which you have before turning anything.

Adjusting a fixed spray head

Fixed sprays have two possible adjustments, and one of them may not exist on your nozzle.

Distance (radius). There's a small screw in the center of the nozzle. Turning it clockwise pushes a deflector into the stream and shortens the throw; counter-clockwise opens it back up. Use a small flathead screwdriver, and turn the water on so you can see what you're doing.

A word of caution: this screw works by breaking up the water stream, so heavy reduction makes the pattern messier and less even. If you need to cut the distance by more than about a quarter, swap to a nozzle with the correct radius instead. Nozzles are inexpensive and it's a better result.

Arc (pattern). This depends entirely on your nozzle:

  • Fixed-pattern nozzles are stamped with their arc — 90, 180, 360 and so on. These cannot be adjusted. To change the pattern you change the nozzle.
  • Adjustable-arc nozzles (VAN style) let you rotate the outer collar to set anything from a narrow wedge to a full circle. Hold the riser so it doesn't spin in the body, and twist the collar.

To set an adjustable nozzle, pull the riser up, note where the fixed edge of the pattern starts, and rotate the collar until the other edge lands where you want it. The fixed edge is your reference point — that's the part people get wrong.

Adjusting a rotor

Rotors adjust differently. Most have an adjustment socket on the top of the head that takes a plastic key or a flathead screwdriver.

  • Arc is set by holding the turret at the fixed start edge and rotating the top to add or subtract degrees of travel. Most models let you go roughly 40 degrees up to a full circle. Nearly every brand marks a plus and minus on the top.
  • Distance is adjusted with a radius-reduction screw that cuts into the stream, same principle as a spray head. Again, big reductions hurt the pattern — nozzle swaps are the better fix. Most rotors ship with a set of interchangeable nozzles in different flow rates.

If a rotor turns one way and stops, or won't return, first confirm the arc is set correctly. If the arc is fine and it still won't drive, the gear train is likely worn and the head needs replacing.

The rule that matters more than any adjustment

Aim for head-to-head coverage. The spray from each head should reach the base of the next head over. This constantly looks like overwatering to homeowners, and it isn't — the outer edge of any sprinkler pattern applies far less water than the area near the head. Overlap is what evens it out.

If your heads only just meet at their edges, you'll get a ring of underwatered turf between them. That's the actual cause of most mystery dry spots, far more often than a broken head.

Also: don't mix head types on one zone. Rotors and fixed sprays apply water at very different rates, so a zone with both will always overwater one area while underwatering the other. If yours are mixed, that's worth correcting properly.

How to check your work

Run the zone and watch a full cycle. Look for water on hard surfaces, obvious gaps, and heads fighting each other. For a real measurement, set a few straight-sided containers around the zone, run it fifteen minutes, and compare the depths. Wildly different depths mean uneven coverage that no amount of extra run time will fix — see our guide to overspray and wasted water.

When to stop adjusting and swap parts

Adjustment solves aiming problems. It doesn't solve wrong-part problems. If you're cranking radius screws all the way down, mixing head types, or trying to make a 15-foot nozzle cover 8 feet, the fix is different nozzles or a head that suits the space. That's a quick, inexpensive change and the coverage improvement is immediate.

Which way do I turn the screw to reduce sprinkler distance?

On most fixed spray heads, turning the center radius screw clockwise reduces the throw distance. It works by deflecting part of the stream, so expect it to get a little less uniform as you dial it down. Reducing distance more than about 25 percent usually means you want a smaller nozzle instead.

How do I adjust the arc on a Rain Bird spray head?

On adjustable-arc nozzles you rotate the nozzle collar to set the pattern, typically anywhere from a narrow wedge up to a full circle. Fixed-pattern nozzles can't be adjusted at all — a 90-degree nozzle is always 90 degrees, and changing the pattern means changing the nozzle.

Why does my rotor head only turn one direction?

Many rotors are designed to drive in one direction and return. If it's stopping short or not returning, the arc adjustment may be set wrong, or the internal drive is worn. Rotors have a different adjustment method than spray heads, usually a key or a screwdriver slot on top.

Should heads overlap or just meet?
