The invisible failure

When a zone goes dead and nothing looks wrong

If a zone won't fire and there's no leak, no stuck valve, and the heads look fine, the signal isn't reaching the valve. Somewhere between the controller and that zone, a wire is cut, corroded, or disconnected.

It happens more than people think — a shovel or auger nicks a wire during landscaping, a fence post goes straight through a line, aeration tines catch a shallow run, or rodents chew the insulation. The break is usually underground and invisible, which is exactly why it needs the right tools to find.

Signs of a wire break

Wiring faults look like valve problems until you test the signal.

  • One or more zones completely dead, no response
  • Zones stopped working after digging or fence work
  • The controller shows a fault or 'no current' on a zone
  • Multiple zones quit at once (a shared common wire)
  • Intermittent zones that work some days, not others
  • Recent landscaping, aeration, or trenching nearby
How we fix it

Traced with a locator, spliced to last

We confirm the controller is actually sending a signal, then use a wire locator to follow the run underground and pinpoint exactly where the break is — no trenching up the whole yard hoping to find it.

Once we find it, we repair the break with waterproof, direct-burial connectors so it doesn't corrode and fail again next season. Then we run the zone to confirm the signal is back and the valve fires on command.

  • Controller signal verified first
  • Underground wire tracing with a locator
  • Waterproof, direct-burial splices
  • Shared common-wire faults found
  • Solenoid wiring checked at the valve
  • Zone re-tested before we leave
