How to Winterize Your Sprinkler System in Texas (Gulf Coast Guide)

Gulf Coast winters are mild until they aren't. Here's how to protect your sprinklers and backflow preventer before the next hard freeze hits Pearland.

Winterizing a sprinkler system means something different on the Gulf Coast than it does in Dallas or Denver. We don't get months of frozen ground. What we get is a mild winter interrupted, every few years, by a hard freeze that arrives fast and stays below freezing for a day or three.

That pattern is precisely why sprinkler freeze damage is so common around Pearland. Systems here aren't prepared, because most winters they don't need to be. Then a real freeze comes through and the repair calls start the following week.

Here's how to get ahead of it without over-engineering the problem.

What actually freezes and breaks

Water expands as it freezes. Anywhere water sits in a component that can't flex, a freeze can crack it. In our climate the damage concentrates in a few predictable places:

  • The backflow preventer. This is the most common casualty by far. It's mounted above ground, it holds water in its body, and it's usually brass or plastic. A hard freeze cracks the body or blows out the internal seals. It's also the most expensive single component on most residential systems, which makes it the one worth protecting.
  • Exposed piping. Any riser or pipe above grade, especially PVC, which gets brittle in the cold.
  • Valves in shallow boxes. Our valve boxes aren't buried deep. In a multi-day freeze, the shallowest ones are at risk.
  • Sprinkler heads holding water. Less common, but cracked caps do happen.

Buried lateral lines are generally fine. Soil is a decent insulator and our freezes don't last long enough to drive frost deep.

The Gulf Coast winterizing checklist

You don't need a compressor and a full blowout. You do need these five things.

1. Shut off the water to the system. Find the irrigation isolation valve — typically near the backflow preventer on the side of the house — and close it. This is the single most valuable step, because a cracked component with no water pressure behind it makes a mess; a cracked component still connected to the main makes a flood.

2. Drain what you can. Open the test cocks and bleed valves on the backflow assembly to let trapped water out. Open any manual drain valves on the system. Water that isn't there can't freeze.

3. Insulate the backflow preventer. Wrap it with insulating material and cover it. Purpose-made insulated covers work well; so does a wrap of pipe insulation plus a bag or bucket over the top. Leave the drain outlets unblocked so any water that does get in can escape. Don't seal it airtight against the ground where moisture collects.

4. Turn off the watering schedule. Set the controller to off or rain mode. Most controllers keep your programming in memory, so you're not starting from scratch in spring. Watering right before a freeze is worse than not watering at all — it ices sidewalks and stresses dormant grass.

When a hard freeze is actually forecast

The steps above are your baseline for the season. When a genuine hard freeze is in the forecast — sustained hours below freezing, not a light frost — add these:

  • Double-check the isolation valve is fully closed.
  • Re-drain the backflow assembly if you've run the system since you drained it.
  • Make sure the insulation is dry. Wet insulation is worse than none; it freezes into a jacket of ice against the brass.
  • Skip any scheduled watering for the day before and the day of.

After the freeze: check before you run it

This is the part people miss. A cracked backflow or split pipe often shows no symptoms until you pressurize the system again. Turning the water back on and walking away can flood a yard or run for hours undetected.

When you restore water in spring — or after a freeze passes — open the isolation valve slowly and then walk the system. Look at the backflow body for cracks and drips, check the valve boxes for standing water, and run each zone one at a time while watching for geysers, soft spots, and heads that don't come up. What it costs to skip it

The math is lopsided. Insulating a backflow assembly and shutting off the isolation valve costs an afternoon and a few dollars of materials. Replacing a backflow preventer that split in a freeze is one of the more expensive single repairs on a residential system, and it usually comes with a retest and refiling on top.

There's also the timing problem: hard freezes hit the whole region at once, so every irrigation company in the Houston area gets the same wave of calls the same week. Being ahead of it is worth more than the parts.
