One Sprinkler Zone Won't Turn On? Here's How to Track It Down
A single dead sprinkler zone almost always comes down to the valve, the wiring, or the controller. Here's how to narrow it down before you dig.

Every other zone runs fine. One section of the yard gets nothing. It's one of the most common calls we take, and it's also one of the most diagnosable — because a single dead zone rules out most of the system immediately.
Here's the logic: your controller, main line, backflow, and water supply are shared by every zone. If the other zones water normally, all of that shared equipment is working. What's left is the small handful of parts unique to the zone that's down — its valve, its control wire, and the controller terminal driving it.
That's it. Three suspects. Here's how to work through them in order.
Start at the controller
Before you touch anything in the yard, rule out the simplest explanation: the controller isn't actually calling for that zone.
Put the controller in manual mode and start the dead zone directly. Watch the display. If the controller shows the zone running and you can hear a faint click or hum from the valve box when it starts, the controller is doing its job and you can move outside.
Two things to check while you're at the panel:
- Is the zone actually programmed? A cleared program, a schedule someone edited, or a controller that lost its settings after a power blip will skip a zone entirely.
- Does the controller show a fault? Many models detect a short on a zone output and will flag it or skip that station. If your controller reports a shorted station, that's a strong signal the problem is the wire or the solenoid, not the valve body. Test the valve by hand
Now go to the valve box for that zone. Most residential valves give you two ways to open them without any electricity:
- The bleed screw. Loosen it a turn or two. Water should escape and the valve should open.
- The solenoid. Twist it counter-clockwise a quarter to a half turn — not all the way out.
If the zone comes to life and the heads pop up, that's the most useful result you can get. It means the valve, the diaphragm, and all the plumbing downstream are fine, and your problem is electrical. Close the bleed screw or retighten the solenoid and move to the wiring section below.
If the zone does not water even with the valve open by hand, the problem is mechanical or hydraulic — a valve that's seized, a diaphragm packed with grit, or a break in the lateral line. That's valve repair territory.
Chase the electrical side
If manual operation worked, the valve is fine and something in the electrical path is broken. There are three links in that chain.
The solenoid. This is the black cylinder on top of the valve that converts the controller's signal into valve movement. Solenoids fail — coils burn out, and they're a common casualty of a nearby lightning strike, which we get plenty of on the Gulf Coast. A solenoid should read within a fairly narrow resistance range on a multimeter; wildly high or near-zero readings mean it's done.
The wire. Each valve has a control wire back to the controller plus a shared common wire. Breaks happen where you'd expect: where someone dug, where a fence post went in, where a tree root moved the soil, and — most often — at an old splice. A splice buried without a waterproof connector will corrode in our wet clay, and it may work for years before it finally opens up.
The connections. Corroded wire nuts at the valve itself are extremely common. Pull the connections apart and look. Green, crusty copper means you've found at least part of your problem.

The narrowing-down cheat sheet
- Other zones work, this one doesn't, valve opens by hand → electrical: solenoid, wire, or connection.
- Valve won't open by hand either → mechanical: seized valve, packed diaphragm, or a broken line.
- Controller shows a short or skips the station → almost certainly a shorted solenoid or a damaged wire.
- Zone runs but weakly → not a dead zone at all; that's a pressure problem.
- Nothing on any zone → shared equipment: water supply, main line, backflow, or controller power.
Why dead zones cluster in late summer
We take more of these calls in August than any other month, and it isn't coincidence. Solenoids that were marginal in spring have been cycling daily through months of heat. Splices that were merely damp in May have been sitting in saturated clay through a summer of storms. And the zone that's been quietly weak finally gives up during the stretch when the lawn can least afford to miss water.
If a zone has been acting up intermittently since spring, get it looked at before July rather than after. Intermittent electrical faults almost never resolve on their own, and the repair is identical whether you do it in April or during the hottest week of the year.
When it's worth calling
Opening a bleed screw and looking at wire nuts is reasonable homeowner territory. Digging for a buried wire break, replacing a valve, or metering solenoids usually isn't — not because it's difficult, but because without a locator you're excavating on a hunch, and in gumbo clay that's a long afternoon and a torn-up lawn.
