Sprinkler Controller Not Working? A Homeowner's Troubleshooting Guide

Blank display, zones that won't start, or a schedule that runs twice — here's how to diagnose an irrigation controller before you replace it.

The controller is the brain of a sprinkler system, and when something goes wrong it's the first place people look — often to find a blank screen or a schedule that isn't behaving. The good news is that controller problems fall into a few tidy categories, and quite a few are programming rather than hardware.

Work through these in order before you spend money on a replacement.

The display is blank or dead

Start with power, because that's the answer most of the time.

  • Check the transformer. Most residential controllers run on a plug-in transformer. Confirm it's plugged in and seated properly.
  • Check the outlet. Garage outlets are frequently on a GFCI circuit, and a tripped GFCI somewhere else on that circuit will kill it. Test the outlet with something else, and look for a tripped GFCI in the garage, bathroom, or exterior.
  • Check the breaker. Obvious, but worth ruling out.
  • Check the controller's fuse. Many models have a small fuse or a resettable breaker inside the wiring compartment. A blown fuse usually means a short on one of the zone wires — replacing it without finding the short just blows another.
  • Check the backup battery. On older units a dead 9V won't cause a blank display while on AC power, but it will wipe the program during an outage.

If there's confirmed power at the transformer and the display is still dead, the controller has failed. They're not usually worth repairing.

The controller runs but nothing waters

This means the controller is fine and the problem is downstream. The chain goes: controller → wire → solenoid → valve → pipe → heads.

First rule out the whole-system explanations:

  • Is the irrigation isolation valve open? This gets closed for winter or during plumbing work and forgotten.
  • Is the backflow preventer open? Both of its ball valves need to be open. After a freeze or a test, one is often left closed.
  • Did the water supply to the house change?

If every zone is dead, it's one of those. If only one zone is dead, the controller isn't your problem at all — work through our guide to a single dead zone.

A zone won't start from the controller

Use the controller's manual mode to run the suspect zone directly. That takes scheduling out of the equation.

If manual works and the schedule doesn't, it's programming. If manual doesn't work either, it's electrical — the wire, the solenoid, or that station output on the controller.

A quick way to isolate the controller itself: move the suspect zone's wire to a station terminal you know works, then run that station. If the zone now waters, the original terminal is bad. If it still doesn't, the fault is in the wire or the valve, and that's wire break or valve territory.

Fault codes and shorts

Many controllers detect an electrical short on a station and respond by flagging an error and skipping that zone, so it doesn't damage itself. If you see a station error, that's genuinely useful information: it means the wire or solenoid for that zone is shorted, not that the controller is broken.

The usual causes are a solenoid whose coil has failed, a nicked wire touching another wire or ground, or a corroded splice. Lightning is a real contributor here — we get plenty of it, and a nearby strike can take out solenoids and controller outputs together.

The schedule is wrong, not the hardware

A surprising share of "broken controller" calls are programming. The usual suspects:

Watering twice in a morning. Two start times on the same program, or the same zone included in two programs. One start time runs the whole sequence of zones — you don't need one per zone. This is the single most common mistake we see.

Nothing runs on schedule but manual works. Check that the program is enabled, that the correct days are selected, that the seasonal adjust (water budget) isn't set to zero, and that the controller isn't in Rain/Off mode. A rain sensor that has failed in the "wet" state will also suppress watering indefinitely — disconnecting it temporarily tells you fast.

The clock is wrong. A controller running on the wrong time or wrong AM/PM will water at odd hours. After an outage, check the clock.

Seasonal adjust left high. Set to 150% in August and forgotten in November, this quietly overwaters all winter.

A note on lightning

We get a lot of electrical storms, and controllers sit at the end of a web of buried wire that runs all over the yard. A nearby strike doesn't need to hit the house to induce a surge on those wires and take out solenoids, station outputs, or the controller itself.

The telltale pattern is several zones failing at once, or a controller that powers up but won't drive any station. If that happens after a storm, mention it — it changes what we check first, and it's worth asking whether surge protection makes sense for your setup.

When to repair vs. replace

Replace the controller when the display is dead with confirmed power, when multiple station outputs have failed, or when it's old enough that it can't do what you need — no multiple start times means no cycle-and-soak, which matters a lot in our clay soil.

Repair or reprogram when it's a fuse, a battery, a rain sensor stuck wet, or a schedule someone edited. Those are cheap fixes.

Why is my sprinkler controller display blank?

Usually power. Check that the transformer is plugged in and the outlet is live, look for a tripped GFCI, and check the controller's own fuse if it has one. If power is present and the display is still dead, the controller itself has likely failed.

My controller runs but no water comes out. Why?

The controller is doing its job and something downstream isn't. Confirm the water supply and isolation valve are open, then check the individual valve and its wiring. A controller can happily signal a zone whose valve or wire is broken.

Why does my system water twice in one morning?

Almost always multiple start times set on the same program, or the same zone assigned to two different programs. Look for a second start time you forgot about — it's the most common programming mistake we see.

Will a power outage erase my sprinkler schedule?

Older controllers with a dead backup battery can lose everything. Most modern controllers store the program in non-volatile memory and keep it indefinitely, though the clock may need resetting.
